Know the equivalent decimal and percentage forms for everyday fractions.

Know the equivalent decimal and percentage forms for everyday fractions.

In Maths we have been learning:
  • To convert between fractions, decimals , percentages and vice versa.

The most challenging part about this unit of learning was understanding how to convert everything into decimals, percentages and fractions.

My next learning step in Maths is to apply this knowledge to help me solve a range of increasingly more complicated maths problems.

Election Writing Term 3 2017

WALT: Write an effective argument for our chosen political party.

I would march for National. Would you? I would march for National because they have many good policies and points for getting into parliament for their 10th year in history. The points I am going to cover are making it easier for landlords to test properties for meth and evict tenants, continuing a social bonds plan to help people with a mental illness get into work, and last but not least why I am against the Maori party's idea to replace the Independent Police Conduct Authority with an Anti-Corruption Commission. Which I agree with all. Us as a country need to step up and get in behind National and their idea to make it easier for landlords to test properties for meth and evict tenants.

National has created a policy to make it easier for landlords to test properties for meth and evict tenants. Because of this New Zealand would be a safer country. National would change the law to make it easier for landlords to test properties for methamphetamine and evict tenants. Which I think is a great idea as people are getting into drugs but in the other hand it might not be a safe idea. Landlords would be allowed to enter their rental properties to test for methamphetamine and would be required to notify their tenants of the results of any testing. I think that they should already be allowed in but in the other hand it’s quite unsafe. Where a property is found to be contaminated to an unsafe level of meth, the landlord would be allowed to evict the tenant and the tenant would be allowed to end their tenancy. As well as our housing needing to be sorted our health needs to be too. We aren’t helping the people who are really in need of a job! Why?

National has made this great policy to continue to pilot a social bonds programme to help people with a mental illness into work. National believes that employment can help people with mental illness because it provides financial security and improves mental wellbeing. A social bonds approach uses private enterprise to help provide public services to help with this. Continuing to pilot approach in the mental health context should provide a financial incentive to mental health service providers to help get those with mental illness into work. Why does the maori party want to ruin our justice, New Zealand's justice? And this is why I'm against their idea to  replace the Independent Police Conduct Authority with an Anti-Corruption Commission. Why does the Maori Party want to ruin our justice , New Zealand's justice? And this is why I'm against their idea to  replace the Independent Police Conduct Authority with an Anti-Corruption Commission

National has made a promise to the country to improve health , housing and justice. The points I have gone over today were ; making it easier for landlords to test properties for meth and evict tenants, continuing a social bonds plan to help people with a mental illness get into work, and last but not least why I am against the Maori party's idea to replace the Independent Police Conduct Authority with an Anti-Corruption Commission. So have you voted yet?

My next steps are: To add more conjunctions and more emotive launguage.

Librarian

On Wednesday I went to the Library as my job as a Librarian. We had to put away more than 50 books! Mrs Ward was fixing some books at her desk whilst Brianna and I put them away. I have 1 overdue book but I haven't finished reading it so I renewed it. I got a book out called The Castle it's a really good book. It's by Sophia Bennett. Letter Writing

Letter Writing

In Writing we have been learning to write a formal letter.

We have followed the writing process and have planned and drafted a formal letter.

This shows the process that we have followed.

Here is the letter that I have written Link
Here is my reflection on the letter writing that we have done.
Link ( I could not fill out some of the boxes because I wasn't there for those parts )

One thing that I found challenging about writing formal letters was the fact that it needed to be written in a formal fashion and everything needed to be correct e.g punctuation, spelling

My next step is: look for more opportunities to put my letter writing knowledge into practice in the future.

Student Council

At Student council. We decided on more information about ice cream day. We are going to be serving it in a ice cream cup and will come with a spoon. We decided on $2.50 on an ice cream . I personally thought it would be a good idea to sell them as $1 for 1 scoop $2 for 2 scoops. We decided that the Year 6's Student Council representatives should make an order form on a Google doc. They will go around the classes and ask who will buy it and what flavor. I showed the CARE values by always showing up and contributing to a group discussion.  I showed the Leadership trait of Active Thinker because when I came up with an idea I shared it with the group.

Use a range of multiplicative strategies when operating on whole numbers T3

Use a range of multiplicative strategies when operating on whole numbers

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

The escape

A prisoner sits in his cell planning his escape. The prisoner is kept in by 5 laser beams, which operate along a corridor. Each laser is switched off at a specific time interval for just long enough to allow a person to walk through. The time between being switched off for each laser is shown below:

  • Laser One = every 3 minutes
  • Laser Two = every 2 minutes
  • Laser Three = every 5 minutes
  • Laser Four = every 4 minutes
  • Laser Five = every 1 minutes

The guard patrols and checks the prisoner each time all the laser beams are off simultaneously. Because each laser only switches off for a short time the prisoner knows he can only get past one laser at a time. He has to get past the five lasers from 1 to 5 in order. Laser One is at the entrance of the prisoner’s cell and laser Five is at the door to the outside. He also knows that if he spends longer than 4 minutes 12 seconds in the corridor an alarm will go off.

Can the prisoner escape without the alarm in the corridor going off? Yes

If he can escape, how many minutes should he wait before passing Laser One? 1

How much time will he have after passing Laser Five before the guard raises the  alarm?  12seconds

Home learning challenge 4 Distinction

On Saturday I worked for my Mum's boss Lilly. Her company is called Miss Lilly's Boutique Catering. I worked in the food truck caravan with Noni (chef) preparing the food and putting the garnishes on the canapes. We catered for a 60th Birthday Party and I did some waitressing, but I didn't really like it because there were a lot of people and I didn't want to drop any of the food.

I also worked at another party for someone turning 65 and the party was out in Rangiora.  Mum had me waitressing as there weren't so many people and they were really friendly, asking me questions about what I was serving.  I was able to answer them as I had helped Mum and Noni put the food on the plates and do the garnishes again.  When we got back to Lilly's kitchen we had to empty the food truck of all the dirty dishes and plates, ready for the dishwasher to wash the next day.

It was a lot of fun working with my Mum, Noni and Heather who were really helpful and kind. They showed me what to do and helped me with learning about health and safety when working with food and in a kitchen.  The main rule is to make sure your hands are clean.

I am grateful that Lilly gave me the chance to do work experience with her business.

Term 2 Novel Study.

This term I have been reading and studying the novel Silver stream by Jillian Sullivan.

I found this novel interesting  because Lorna's Mother went to camp. Lorna is a strong brave girl that will risk her life to help those in need. Lorna replaced Dana's place in the camp because Dana was pregnant. Lorna made a new friend called Rebekah . Rebekah and Lorna escaped the camp but then disaster struck...
During the novel I had to complete a thinking map which shows that I can classify how the author has shown the theme of the book.

National Standard this covers.

  • Year 7/8  Standard
    • I can identify and evaluate the way writers’ use language and ideas to suit their purpose and I can use my growing wide range of academic and content-specific vocabulary to understand texts.

Overall I would give this novel a rating of  8/10 and I would / would not  recommend it to others to read because……………...because…………
